What it is used for
According to the US FDA label for ribavirin capsules (DailyMed), ribavirin is used for chronic hepatitis C in patients 3 years and older with compensated liver disease, only in combination with interferon alfa-2b (pegylated or standard); it does not work on its own. The US label carries a boxed warning: ribavirin can cause birth defects, so it must not be used in pregnancy or by men whose partner is pregnant, it can cause anemia that may worsen heart disease, and it must not be used alone.
