What the Western Australia Men's Health Study found

Researchers at the Keogh Institute and the University of Western Australia mailed questionnaires to an age-stratified random sample of WA men from the electoral roll and received 1,580 completed responses from men aged 20 to 99. Using the five-item International Index of Erectile Function, the age-adjusted prevalence of any erectile dysfunction among adult WA men was 25.1%, and of severe ED 8.5%. Among participants aged 65 and over, 67% had ED and 48% severe ED. Among those aged 80 and over, the figures were 68% and 57%.

Two other findings are worth knowing. Prevalence did not differ significantly between white-collar and blue-collar workers. And most of the older men were married or partnered, and many were still sexually active, which is a reminder that ED in later life is a real quality-of-life issue rather than an expected end point.

Older Perth men: the Health In Men Study

The Health In Men Study followed 3,274 community-dwelling Perth men aged 75 to 95. In 2008 to 2009, 49.4% reported erectile problems, 47.7% lacked interest in sex, 38.7% were unable to climax and 20.4% were anxious about their sexual performance. Painful or unpleasurable sex was uncommon, under 5%.

Why age changes how tadalafil should be used

Tadalafil works the same way at 75 as at 45, but older men are more likely to be taking medicines that interact with it and more likely to have reduced kidney function. The Cialis label sets lower limits when kidney function is reduced: with creatinine clearance of 30 to 50 mL/min, start at 5 mg and take no more than 10 mg once every 48 hours; below 30 mL/min or on dialysis, no more than 5 mg once every 72 hours, and daily dosing is not recommended. A recent kidney function blood test is worth having before starting.
