Retinoid Strength Chart: Adapalene, Tretinoin, Tazarotene and Retinol Compared

Retinoid percentages are the most misleading numbers in skincare. Tretinoin 0.025% is not four times weaker than adapalene 0.1%, and retinol 1% is nowhere near tretinoin 1%. Each percentage refers to a different molecule with different receptor affinity, different conversion requirements and different vehicle penetration, so the numbers cannot be compared directly across products.

Two entries deserve a note. Adapalene is not simply a weaker tretinoin, it is a receptor selective drug that skips RAR alpha, so it delivers similar acne benefit with less inflammation rather than less of everything. Adapinoid is a newer cosmetic prodrug of adapalene that has been trialled against retinol rather than against prescription adapalene, so it belongs firmly in the cosmetic tier despite the name.
Adapalene to tretinoin strength equivalents
These equivalents come from head to head randomised trials rather than from lining up the percentages. The comparison is for acne, where the direct evidence exists.

The most searched specific pairing, adapalene 0.1% against tretinoin 0.025%, is the best evidenced one on the list. Those two are functionally interchangeable for acne, with adapalene producing meaningfully less irritation.
Note the oddity in row three. Adapalene 0.1% matched tretinoin microsphere gel 0.1%, but the microsphere vehicle deliberately slows tretinoin release, so that formulation is gentler than conventional tretinoin 0.1% gel. Do not read it as adapalene 0.1% equalling standard tretinoin 0.1%.
Retinol to tretinoin conversion
Retinol requires two enzymatic conversion steps in the skin (retinol to retinaldehyde to retinoic acid), and the conversion is inefficient. The widely used working estimate is that retinol is roughly ten to twenty times weaker than tretinoin at the same concentration, so retinol 1% behaves something like tretinoin 0.05% to 0.1% in rough terms.

Treat these as directional rather than precise. Conversion efficiency varies between individuals, and formulation stability matters enormously for retinol, which oxidises readily. Where tazarotene sits
Tazarotene is generally the most potent topical retinoid in routine dermatological use, with strong evidence in acne, psoriasis and photoageing. It is also the most irritating. Tazarotene 0.1% sits above tretinoin 0.1% on most clinical rankings, and tazarotene 0.05% is broadly in tretinoin 0.05% to 0.1% territory.

Choosing a starting strength
- First retinoid ever: adapalene 0.1% or tretinoin 0.025%, two to three nights per week.
- Used cosmetic retinol comfortably for six months: tretinoin 0.025% is a sensible step up. Do not jump straight to 0.1%.
- Tolerating tretinoin 0.025% nightly with no irritation after three months: step to 0.05%.
- Anti ageing focus, skin already retinoid adapted: tretinoin 0.05% to 0.1% is where the photoageing evidence sits.
- Repeatedly failed on tretinoin due to irritation: adapalene 0.3% rather than a lower tretinoin dose.

Why a higher percentage is often the wrong move
Retinoid results depend far more on consistent nightly use over months than on concentration. A patient using tretinoin 0.025% five nights a week for a year will outperform a patient who starts at 0.1%, peels badly, and abandons the tube in week three. The trial data on dropout rates makes this concrete: in a pooled analysis of 591 patients, discontinuation due to adverse events roughly doubled with the more irritating option (PMID 9204089).
Increase strength only when you are using your current strength nightly, with no persistent redness, dryness or stinging, for at least twelve consecutive weeks.
How percentage interacts with formulation
Two products at the same percentage can behave differently:
- Gel versus cream: gels penetrate faster and irritate more. Tretinoin 0.05% cream is gentler than tretinoin 0.05% gel.
- Microsphere and polymer delivery: designed to release the drug gradually, reducing irritation at the same nominal strength.
- Alcohol content: higher alcohol vehicles increase stinging independently of the retinoid.
- Application to damp skin: increases penetration and effectively raises the dose you receive.
