Ivercor 12mg

Ivercor 12 is an ivermectin tablet from Actiza Pharmaceutical, a drug company in Surat, India. Each tablet contains 12 mg of ivermectin, four times the strength of the 3 mg Stromectol tablet that is approved in the US, Canada and Australia. Ivermectin treats specific parasitic infections, and the dose depends on body weight: one 12 mg tablet is the single strongyloidiasis dose for an adult of 51 to 65 kg. Be realistic about quantity. A strongyloidiasis course for a 51 to 65 kg adult is one tablet, and a scabies course is usually two doses a week or two apart, so even the smallest pack covers many courses. Check the expiry date on the strips when your order arrives.

Ivercor compared with Stromectol and US generics

Stromectol is Merck's ivermectin, first approved by the FDA in 1996 (originally as a 6 mg tablet; the 3 mg tablet is the one sold today). Since 2014 the FDA has approved several generic 3 mg tablets rated as therapeutically equivalent (AB) to it, which means they were shown to be bioequivalent. Ivercor contains the same drug, but no stringent regulator such as the FDA, MHRA, TGA or Health Canada has reviewed its bioequivalence to Stromectol, so its quality depends on the manufacturer and the supply chain.

These are what US pharmacies paid according to the Medicaid NADAC survey; the price at the counter is higher. A US prescription for a single dose needs only four generic tablets, so if you are in the US and have a prescription, compare cash prices for FDA-approved generic ivermectin before ordering. Working out the dose

Ivermectin is dosed by body weight, usually as a single dose (scabies needs two, and people with weakened immune systems may need repeated courses). The Stromectol label gives the strongyloidiasis dose in 3 mg tablets; one Ivercor 12 tablet equals four of them.

For onchocerciasis the dose is lower, about 150 mcg per kg, so 12 mg is the label dose for 65 to 84 kg. For scabies, the Australian label and the US CDC use 200 mcg per kg, given twice about one to two weeks apart; in the US this is an off-label use, and the CDC advises taking each scabies dose with food. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 15 kg. Higher strengths are rarely needed: at 200 mcg per kg, a 24 mg tablet is the calculated dose for someone weighing about 120 kg. Our ivermectin dosage guide and scabies dosage guide cover other uses.

How to take Ivercor 12

• Get the infection diagnosed first. Other worms need other drugs, and some infections need follow-up tests.
• The US and Australian labels say to take ivermectin on an empty stomach with water. A high-fat meal raised absorption about 2.5-fold. For scabies, CDC guidance says to take each dose with food. Follow your prescriber's instructions on timing and on the number of doses.
• For strongyloidiasis, the label advises at least three stool tests over the three months after treatment, because larvae reappeared in some patients up to 106 days later. Retreat if larvae return.
• For onchocerciasis, ivermectin kills the larvae but not the adult worms, so retreatment is usually needed, at intervals as short as 3 months for individual patients.

What ivermectin treats, and what it does not

In the studies behind the Stromectol label, a single dose of about 200 mcg per kg cured 64% to 100% of patients with intestinal strongyloidiasis, and was more effective than albendazole. In onchocerciasis, a single 150 mcg per kg dose reduced skin microfilariae by 99.5% at 3 months. The Australian label adds crusted scabies alongside topical treatment, and scabies when topical treatment has failed or cannot be used. UK-licensed generic tablets are approved for intestinal strongyloidiasis, lymphatic filariasis and scabies.

Ivermectin tablets are not an effective treatment for COVID-19. Two large randomised, placebo-controlled trials in outpatients found no benefit, including at doses two to three times the strongyloidiasis dose given for several days.

Ivermectin tablets are not approved for any other condition in the US, UK, Australia or Canada; topical ivermectin is separately approved for rosacea and head lice. We sell these tablets for the parasitic infections above and do not recommend them for anything else.

Side effects

At the approved doses, ivermectin is usually well tolerated. In the strongyloidiasis trials, each side effect was reported by fewer than 3% of patients; the most common were dizziness and itching (2.8% each), then diarrhoea and nausea. In onchocerciasis, reactions to dying larvae, called Mazzotti reactions (itching, rash, swollen glands, joint pain, fever), are common in the first days. Safety warnings

• Confusion or drowsiness: the current Stromectol label reports altered consciousness from drowsiness to coma, confusion, disorientation and death, at recommended doses as well as in overdose. These reactions generally resolved after stopping ivermectin with supportive care. Stop and get help for any confusion, unusual drowsiness or difficulty walking. If you take more than the dose you were prescribed, contact a doctor or emergency department straight away.
• Loa loa: people heavily infected with Loa loa, found in parts of West and Central Africa, can rarely develop a serious or fatal brain reaction after treatment. Anyone with significant exposure to those areas should be assessed before treatment and followed up afterwards.
• Other rare serious reactions: since approval, severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), seizures, hepatitis, low blood pressure and worsening asthma have been reported. Get urgent help for a blistering rash, a seizure, yellowing skin, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing.
• Warfarin: increased INR has been reported rarely when ivermectin was taken with warfarin, so tell your doctor if you take it.
• Pregnancy: the label says ivermectin should not be used during pregnancy, because safety has not been established. It passes into breast milk in low concentrations, and the label says breastfeeding mothers should be treated only when the risk of delaying treatment outweighs the possible risk to the baby.
• Never use veterinary ivermectin such as horse paste. It is made for animals, at concentrations not intended for people.

Prescription and legal status

• US: ivermectin tablets are prescription drugs under federal law, although several states, including Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas, have passed laws allowing sale without a prescription (in some, only from a pharmacist). The FDA says personal importation of unapproved medicines is illegal in most circumstances.
• UK: the MHRA has licensed generic ivermectin 3 mg tablets (the first in April 2023) for intestinal strongyloidiasis, lymphatic filariasis and scabies, as prescription-only medicines. Ivercor has no UK licence.
• Australia: oral ivermectin is a prescription-only (Schedule 4) medicine. TGA-registered oral products include Stromectol and a generic, Glenmect (Glenmark). The TGA says ivermectin is not approved for COVID-19 and should not be imported for that purpose.
• Canada: Health Canada approved Stromectol in 2018 for intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis; ivermectin tablets need a prescription.

Checking your tablets

When your order arrives, check that each strip shows the brand, the manufacturer, the strength, a batch number and an expiry date, and reject strips that are damaged, unsealed or unmarked. These checks cannot prove a product is genuine on their own, because counterfeiters copy packaging. If a batch causes unusual symptoms, stop using it, seek medical advice, and report it to your medicines regulator (the MHRA Yellow Card scheme in the UK, FDA MedWatch in the US, the TGA in Australia or Health Canada) as well as to us.
