What it is used for
According to the UK SmPC for azathioprine 25 mg film coated tablets (emc), azathioprine is used for helping organ transplants such as kidney, heart and liver transplants survive, together with other immunosuppressants; moderate to severe inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) in people who need corticosteroids, cannot tolerate them, or have not responded to other first line treatment; and, in some people, severe active rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis and polymyositis, autoimmune chronic active hepatitis, pemphigus vulgaris, polyarteritis nodosa, autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and chronic refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The US label carries a boxed warning that long term immunosuppression with azathioprine increases the risk of cancer, including lymphoma. Your doctor decides whether it suits you.
