About Bupron XL 300mg
Bupron XL 300mg is an Indian brand of bupropion hydrochloride 300 mg extended-release tablets. Tata 1mg and Apollo Pharmacy name Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd as the marketer, and Truemeds names Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd. Bupropion is an antidepressant of the aminoketone class; it is presumed to work through noradrenaline and dopamine, and it does not act on serotonin reuptake (US Wellbutrin XL label 11, 12.1). In the US and Canada, bupropion XL tablets are labelled for major depressive disorder and for preventing seasonal (autumn and winter) depression. We sell Bupron XL 300mg in packs of 30, 60 and 90 tablets, from $1.46 a tablet in the largest pack before shipping.
Three points first. An antidepressant must be started and monitored by a doctor: the US label carries a boxed warning that antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children, adolescents and young adults, and the urgent help section below lists crisis lines. Second, 300 mg is the usual target dose, not a starting dose. The US and Canadian labels start at 150 mg once daily and raise the dose to 300 mg only after 4 to 7 days (US) or 1 week (Canada), because bupropion can cause seizures and the risk is dose-related. The current US Wellbutrin XL label and the generic XL labels we checked say "The dose should not exceed 300 mg once daily", and the Canadian monograph calls 300 mg a day the maximum dose. And on price, plainly: US pharmacies pay about 10 cents a tablet for generic bupropion XL 300 mg, so if you are in the US with a prescription, a local generic will almost always cost you less than our tablets. This page sets out the doses, warnings and prices from the current US Wellbutrin XL label, the Canadian Wellbutrin XL product monograph and the UK Zyban SmPC, listed at the end.
Bupron XL 300mg at a glance
| Active ingredient | Bupropion hydrochloride 300 mg per extended-release (XL) tablet, an aminoketone antidepressant |
| Brand and maker | Bupron XL, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Mumbai (Tata 1mg and Apollo listings; Truemeds names Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd). The original XL brand is Wellbutrin XL (Bausch Health in the US and Canada) |
| Regulatory status | Bupropion XL is licensed as an antidepressant in the US (Wellbutrin XL and generics) and Canada (Wellbutrin XL, prescription). In the UK and Australia we found bupropion licensed on its own only as Zyban 150 mg for stopping smoking (UK POM, Australian Schedule 4), and in a naltrexone combination for weight management (Mysimba in the UK, Contrave in Australia); we found no licence as an antidepressant in either country. This Indian Bupron XL pack is not registered with the FDA, MHRA, TGA or Health Canada |
| Usual dose from the label | Start 150 mg once daily in the morning; after 4 days (depression) or 7 days (seasonal depression) the dose may be increased to the target dose of 300 mg once daily (US 2.2, 2.3). The current US Wellbutrin XL label says "The dose should not exceed 300 mg once daily" (5.3), and the Canadian monograph calls 300 mg a day the maximum dose (4.2) |
| Half-life | About 21 hours for bupropion, with active metabolites of about 20 to 37 hours; steady state within 8 days; peak level about 5 hours after a dose (US 12.3) |
| Packs | 30, 60 and 90 tablets (Indian strips hold 10 tablets per Tata 1mg, Apollo and Truemeds) |
| Price per tablet | $2.00 (30 pack), $1.57 (60 pack) and $1.46 (90 pack), before shipping |
| Delivery | 7 to 14 business days to the US, UK, Australia and Canada; $25 shipping under $149, free from $149 |
What bupropion XL 300 mg is used for
US label (section 1). Wellbutrin XL is indicated for:
- the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) (1.1)
- the prevention of seasonal major depressive episodes in people with a diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) (1.2)
Canadian product monograph (section 1). The symptomatic relief of major depressive illness, and the prevention of major depressive illness with an autumn and winter seasonal pattern. It says people whose seasonal episodes are infrequent or not associated with significant impairment should generally not be treated to prevent them (4.2).
Not for stopping smoking. The US label says Wellbutrin XL "is not approved for smoking cessation treatment; however, bupropion HCl sustained-release is approved for this use" (5.2). The UK and Australian smoking cessation licences are for Zyban, a 150 mg prolonged release tablet taken as 150 mg once daily for six days and then 150 mg twice daily, and the UK label says "The maximum single dose must not exceed 150mg" (UK Zyban SmPC 4.2). A 300 mg XL tablet does not fit that regimen. If you want help to stop smoking, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
Not a weight loss medicine on its own. People often lose some weight on bupropion. In the US depression trials of the sustained-release form, 14% of people on 300 mg a day lost more than 5 lbs, against 6% on placebo (US Table 5). In the three seasonal depression trials of the XL form, 23% lost more than 5 lbs against 11% on placebo, and 11% gained more than 5 lbs against 21% (US Table 6). Weight loss is not a labelled use of bupropion XL. The licensed weight management products that contain bupropion combine it with naltrexone (Mysimba on the UK emc; Contrave in Australia and Canada), and Bupron XL 300 must not be taken with them.
Price per tablet
Prices below are as of October 2026; the pack selector shows the current price.
| Pack | Price | Per tablet | Shipping | Per tablet with shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 tablets | $60 | $2.00 | $25 | $2.83 |
| 60 tablets | $94 | $1.57 | $25 | $1.98 |
| 90 tablets | $131 | $1.46 | $25 | $1.73 |
All three packs are under the $149 free shipping line, so a single pack carries $25 shipping. The larger packs are cheaper per tablet before shipping as well as after it.
How long a pack lasts. At one 300 mg tablet a day, the label target dose, the 30 pack lasts 30 days, the 60 pack 60 days and the 90 pack 90 days (our arithmetic). That only applies once your doctor has already moved you to 300 mg. Bupron XL 300 cannot give the 150 mg starting dose, the 150 mg step down before stopping (US 2.3, 2.5) or a 150 mg maintenance dose, because the tablet must not be divided (US 2.1). Agree the plan with your doctor before you buy, and check that the expiry date on the strips covers the months you need.
Compared with Wellbutrin XL and US generic bupropion XL
| Bupron XL 300mg (ours, Indian pack) | US Wellbutrin XL 300 mg | US generic bupropion XL 300 mg | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | Sun Pharma (India) | Bausch Health | Many US generic makers |
| FDA status | Not registered with the FDA (Indian pack) | Approved (NDA 021515, first approved 28 August 2003) | Approved generics |
| Cost per tablet | $1.46 to $2.00 before shipping | No row in the 2026 NADAC file | NADAC $0.09815 |
| Cost of 30 tablets | $60 before shipping | Not available from NADAC | About $2.94 at NADAC (our arithmetic) |
NADAC is the average price US pharmacies pay to buy a medicine, published by the US Medicaid programme. It is not the price a patient pays at the counter. In the NADAC file of 28 October 2026, all 46 generic bupropion XL 300 mg tablet NDC rows are at $0.09815 a tablet, effective 21 October 2026 (the 150 mg XL rows are at $0.07817, same date). We found no row for brand Wellbutrin XL in the 2026 NADAC file, by name or by its US NDCs, so we cannot give a brand acquisition cost.
Say it plainly: US generics are far cheaper than ours. Our tablet costs about 15 to 20 times what US pharmacies pay for generic bupropion XL 300 mg, before our shipping (our arithmetic). If you live in the US and have a prescription, compare local cash prices for generic bupropion XL before you order from us.
Is Bupron XL the same as Wellbutrin XL? It has the same active ingredient at the same strength and is sold as a once-daily extended-release tablet. Extended-release tablets from different makers can use different release systems, and we have not seen bioequivalence data comparing Bupron XL with Wellbutrin XL or a US generic. The Indian pack is not registered with any of the four regulators above, so we cannot point to a regulator review of it. Do not swap between bupropion brands or between XL and SR tablets without your doctor: the US label says a switch from the SR form should give "the same total daily dose when possible" (2.4), which is a prescriber's decision.
Which strength to choose
| Daily dose | Product | How it fits the labels |
|---|---|---|
| 150 mg once daily | A 150 mg XL tablet (not this product) | US and Canadian starting dose for depression and seasonal depression (US 2.2, 2.3; Canadian PM 4.2). Canada: the dose can be reduced to or kept at 150 mg if 300 mg is not tolerated. US: the step down before stopping 300 mg (2.5) |
| 300 mg once daily, in the morning | Bupron XL 300mg (this product) | US: the target dose, reached after 4 days of 150 mg for depression or 7 days for seasonal depression (2.2, 2.3). Canada: "The usual adult target dose" and "the 300 mg/day maximum dose", reached as early as 1 week after starting (4.2) |
| Above 300 mg a day | Not recommended | Current US Wellbutrin XL label and the Actavis and Lupin generic XL labels: "The dose should not exceed 300 mg once daily" (5.3). Canada: "The total daily dose of WELLBUTRIN XL must not exceed 300 mg (the maximum recommended dose)" (7, Seizures). Older US Wellbutrin XL labels (for example 2012) allowed up to 450 mg, and section 5.3 of the current label still says the seizure risk "can be reduced if the Wellbutrin XL dose does not exceed 450 mg once daily". A separate US product, Forfivo XL (bupropion 450 mg extended-release), is labelled for people who have taken 300 mg a day for at least 2 weeks and need 450 mg a day, and gives 450 mg as its maximum recommended daily dose (Forfivo XL label 2.2, 5.3). Never take two 300 mg tablets together |
| 150 mg every other day at most | Not this product | US: moderate to severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh 7 to 15) (2.6, 8.7). Bupron XL 300 is not suitable for this group |
We do not currently list a Bupron XL 150 mg tablet. Your doctor sets the dose; never raise it yourself.
How to take Bupron XL 300mg
- Take one tablet once a day in the morning, with or without food (US 2.1). Food did not change how much bupropion was absorbed (US 12.3).
- Swallow it whole. The US label says it "should be swallowed whole and not crushed, divided, or chewed" (2.1); the Canadian monograph says do not tamper with it "in any way that might affect the release rate" (4.4). Crushed tablets that were snorted or injected have caused seizures and deaths (US 9.2).
- If you miss a dose, do not take an extra tablet to make up for it; take the next tablet at the usual time, "because of the dose-related risk of seizure" (US 17). The Canadian monograph says skip the missed dose and take the next one at the normal time the following day (4.5).
- Give it time. The Canadian patient information says improvement "may take several weeks" (Part 3). Keep taking it and talk to your doctor if you are worried it is not working.
- Expect follow-up. The US label says check blood pressure before starting and periodically during treatment (5.4), and watch closely for worsening mood or suicidal thoughts, especially in the first few months and after any dose change (5.1).
- Keep alcohol to a minimum or avoid it. The US label says alcohol "should be minimized or avoided" (7.5). If you drink heavily, do not stop suddenly without medical advice: abrupt withdrawal from alcohol is a contraindication (US 4).
- Be careful driving or using machinery until you know how it affects you (US 17).
- Do not stop it suddenly on your own. The US Medication Guide says "Never stop an antidepressant medicine without first talking to a healthcare provider." At 300 mg, the US label steps down to 150 mg before stopping (2.5).
Lower doses and extra care for some groups
- Liver impairment. US: with moderate to severe impairment (Child-Pugh 7 to 15), "the maximum dose is 150 mg every other day"; with mild impairment, consider reducing the dose or how often it is taken (2.6, 8.7). Bupron XL 300 is not suitable for people with moderate to severe liver impairment. Canada: not recommended in severe liver impairment, and if used the dose "should not exceed 150 mg every day or every other day" (4.2).
- Kidney impairment. US: consider a reduced dose or less frequent dosing when the glomerular filtration rate is below 90 mL/min, and watch closely for side effects (2.7, 8.6).
- Age 65 and over. Older people are more likely to have reduced kidney function, so the US label says this may need to be considered in dose selection (8.5).
- Medicines that change bupropion levels. Ticlopidine and clopidogrel (CYP2B6 inhibitors) can raise bupropion levels; a dose change may be needed (US 7.1). Ritonavir, lopinavir, efavirenz, carbamazepine, phenobarbital and phenytoin may lower them, but even then "the maximum recommended dose should not be exceeded" (US 7.1).
- Medicines bupropion affects. Bupropion inhibits CYP2D6, so it can raise levels of some antidepressants (venlafaxine, nortriptyline, imipramine, desipramine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline), antipsychotics (haloperidol, risperidone, thioridazine), metoprolol, propafenone and flecainide; their doses may need to be lowered (US 7.2). It may make tamoxifen less effective (US 7.2); the UK Zyban label says use with tamoxifen "should whenever possible be avoided" (4.4).
- Children and teenagers. US: safety and effectiveness in children have not been established (8.4). Canada: Health Canada has not authorized an indication for pediatric use (under 18) (1.1).
Suicidal thoughts and mood changes
The US label opens with a boxed warning: "Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term trials. These trials did not show an increase in the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior with antidepressant use in subjects aged 65 and older." It continues: "In patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy, monitor closely for worsening, and for emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Advise families and caregivers of the need for close observation and communication with the prescriber."
In the pooled antidepressant trials behind that warning, there were 14 additional cases of suicidal thinking or behaviour per 1,000 people treated under age 18 and 5 additional cases per 1,000 at ages 18 to 24, against 1 fewer case at ages 25 to 64 and 6 fewer at 65 and over, compared with placebo (US 5.1, Table 1). The label adds that depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves "the strongest predictors of suicide" (5.1).
Watch for anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, acting on impulses, severe restlessness, mania, worsening depression or thoughts of suicide, especially early in treatment and when the dose changes (US 17). The US label also describes delusions, hallucinations, paranoia and confusion in people taking bupropion, and says to stop it if these occur (5.6). Antidepressants can trigger mania, especially in people with bipolar disorder or a family history of it, so doctors should screen for this before starting; Wellbutrin XL is not approved for bipolar depression (US 5.5).
This is the main reason we say an antidepressant must be started and followed up by a doctor who can see you, and not started on your own.
Seizures: the warning to read twice
The US label says: "Wellbutrin XL can cause seizure. The risk of seizure is dose-related. The dose should not exceed 300 mg once daily. Increase the dose gradually. Discontinue Wellbutrin XL and do not restart treatment if the patient experiences a seizure" (5.3).
- How often. The seizure rate with the XL tablet has not been formally studied. With the sustained-release form at up to 300 mg a day it was about 0.1% (1 in 1,000); with the immediate-release form at 300 to 450 mg a day it was about 0.4% (13 of 3,200), and the estimated rate rises almost tenfold between 450 and 600 mg a day (US 5.3).
- Who is contraindicated. People with a seizure disorder or conditions that raise the risk, for example severe head injury, arteriovenous malformation, a brain tumour or brain infection, severe stroke, anorexia or bulimia, or abrupt withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiepileptic drugs (US 5.3, 4).
- What else raises the risk. Other bupropion products, antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, theophylline and steroid tablets or injections; low blood sugar, low sodium, severe liver impairment and low oxygen; cocaine or misuse of stimulants; diabetes treated with tablets or insulin; appetite suppressants; and excessive use of alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives or opiates (US 5.3). The US label says to "use extreme caution" with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold (7.3).
Side effects
This table is the US label's table for the XL tablet itself, from three placebo-controlled seasonal depression trials of up to about 6 months, and lists every reaction it reports.
| Adverse reaction (US Table 4) | Bupropion XL (537 people) | Placebo (511 people) |
|---|---|---|
| Headache | 34% | 26% |
| Dry mouth | 26% | 15% |
| Insomnia | 20% | 13% |
| Nausea | 13% | 8% |
| Nasopharyngitis | 13% | 12% |
| Constipation | 9% | 2% |
| Upper respiratory tract infection | 9% | 8% |
| Anxiety | 7% | 5% |
| Dizziness | 6% | 5% |
| Flatulence | 6% | 3% |
| Sinusitis | 5% | 4% |
| Cough | 4% | 3% |
| Decreased appetite | 4% | 1% |
| Tremor | 3% | Under 1% |
| Abnormal dreams | 3% | 2% |
| Muscle pain (myalgia) | 3% | 2% |
| Pain in arms or legs | 3% | 2% |
| Feeling jittery | 3% | 2% |
| Rash | 3% | 2% |
| Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) | 3% | Under 1% |
| Abdominal pain | 2% | Under 1% |
| Agitation | 2% | Under 1% |
| Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) | 2% | Under 1% |
| High blood pressure | 2% | 0% |
In those trials 9% of people on bupropion and 5% on placebo stopped because of side effects, most often insomnia and headache (US 6.1). In the depression trials of the sustained-release form at 300 mg a day, dry mouth (17% vs 7%), nausea (13% vs 8%), insomnia (11% vs 6%), tremor (6% vs 1%), sweating (6% vs 2%), tinnitus (6% vs 2%) and rash (5% vs 1%) were among the reactions more common than on placebo (US Table 3).
Blood pressure. The US label says treatment "can result in elevated blood pressure and hypertension" (5.4). Using bupropion with a nicotine patch raised the rate further: 6.1% with the combination against 2.5% with bupropion alone in a smoking trial (US 5.4).
Eyes. The pupil widening that many antidepressants cause, bupropion included, "may trigger an angle-closure attack in a patient with anatomically narrow angles who does not have a patent iridectomy" (US 5.7).
Reported after approval (no frequency given): among others, high blood pressure, fainting, heart attack, stroke, Brugada pattern, liver damage and hepatitis, SIADH (a hormone problem that can lower blood sodium), low and high blood sugar, low blood counts, changes in INR with warfarin, rhabdomyolysis, angioedema, DRESS and acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (US 6.2), and rare reports of erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and anaphylactic shock (US 5.8). The UK Zyban label says bupropion may unmask Brugada syndrome and advises caution in people with it or a family history of cardiac arrest or sudden death (4.4); the Canadian monograph advises avoiding use in people with Brugada syndrome (4.1).
When to get urgent help
- Thoughts of suicide or self-harm. If you are in immediate danger, call emergency services (911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia). For crisis support any time, call or text 988 (US), call or text 9-8-8 (Canada), call Samaritans on 116 123 (UK) or Lifeline on 13 11 14 (Australia). Tell your doctor straight away about new or worse depression, thoughts about suicide or dying, or any of the warning signs in the section above (US Medication Guide). These crisis numbers are our advice, not label content.
- A seizure (fit). Call emergency services (our advice). Do not take bupropion again (US 5.3, 17).
- Signs of a serious allergic or skin reaction: rash, itching, hives, fever, swollen lymph glands, painful sores in the mouth or around the eyes, swelling of the lips or tongue, chest pain or trouble breathing. Stop the tablets and get medical help right away (US Medication Guide, 5.8). Anaphylaxis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported (US 4, 5.8).
- Eye pain, changes in vision, or swelling or redness in or around the eye (US Medication Guide). A sudden painful red eye with blurred vision can be acute angle-closure glaucoma, which needs emergency eye care straight away (our advice).
- Signs of mania or psychosis: greatly increased energy, severe trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, reckless behaviour, hallucinations, paranoia or confusion. Call your doctor straight away (US Medication Guide); the US label tells prescribers to stop bupropion if psychosis-type reactions occur (5.6).
- Taking too much. Call emergency services, or in the US Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 (US 10.2); in Australia the Poisons Information Centre is on 13 11 26. Seizures occurred in about a third of reported overdoses, and deaths have been reported; there is no antidote (US 10.1, 10.2).
Tell the medical staff that you take bupropion extended-release, how much and when you last took it, and every other medicine you take, especially other antidepressants, antipsychotics, MAOIs, linezolid, tramadol, theophylline and any other bupropion product.
Who should not take Bupron XL 300mg
Never take it if (US label 4):
- you have a seizure disorder
- you have or have had bulimia or anorexia nervosa
- you are suddenly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiepileptic drugs
- you take an MAOI for a psychiatric disorder, or have taken one in the last 14 days; and wait at least 14 days after stopping bupropion before starting an MAOI antidepressant (US 2.8)
- you are being treated with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue: starting bupropion then is contraindicated
- you are allergic to bupropion or any ingredient of the tablet
The Canadian monograph adds (2): any history of seizures, not only a current seizure disorder; abrupt withdrawal from other sedatives as well as alcohol and benzodiazepines; other medicines that contain bupropion, such as Wellbutrin SR, Zyban and Contrave, "because the incidence of seizure is dose dependent"; and thioridazine, because bupropion may raise thioridazine levels and the risk of "serious ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death". The US label says Wellbutrin XL "should not be used in combination with ZYBAN or any other medications that contain bupropion hydrochloride" (17).
The UK Zyban label (4.3), written for the 150 mg smoking product, also contraindicates any history of seizures, a known brain tumour, severe liver cirrhosis and a history of bipolar disorder.
Pregnancy. US: epidemiological studies of first trimester exposure "have not identified an increased risk of congenital malformations overall"; studies of two specific heart defects gave inconsistent results that do not allow conclusions; and there are risks to the mother from untreated depression (8.1). If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before starting, changing or stopping it. Do not stop an antidepressant on your own because you are pregnant.
Breastfeeding. Bupropion and its metabolites pass into breast milk; seizures have been reported in breastfed infants, though the link is unclear (US 8.2). Talk to your doctor about how to feed your baby (US Medication Guide).
Use only with care:
- Serotonin medicines: the UK Zyban label reports serotonin syndrome when bupropion was combined with SSRIs or SNRIs and advises careful observation (4.4, 4.5).
- Levodopa and amantadine: central nervous system toxicity has been reported; use caution (US 7.4).
- Digoxin: the UK Zyban label says bupropion may lower digoxin levels, and that levels may rise when bupropion is stopped (4.5).
- Heart disease and high blood pressure: there are no controlled studies in people with a recent heart attack or unstable heart disease (US 5.4).
- Narrow angles in the eye: see the eye warning above (US 5.7).
Urine drug tests. Bupropion can cause false-positive urine screening tests for amphetamines, even after stopping; a confirmatory test such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry tells them apart (US 7.7). Tell the testing service that you take it.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every medicine, supplement and herbal product you use.
Prescription and legal status
Bupropion is not a controlled substance in the US (US label 9.1). In the US, Wellbutrin XL and generic bupropion XL are prescription medicines, and the FDA says personal importation of unapproved medicines is illegal in most circumstances. In Canada, Wellbutrin XL 150 mg (DIN 02275090) and 300 mg (DIN 02275104) are marketed as prescription medicines. In the UK, the emc lists Zyban 150 mg prolonged release tablets (GSK, PL 10949/0340) as a prescription-only medicine for smoking cessation; we found no UK licence for bupropion as an antidepressant, though the emc is not the full MHRA register. In Australia, Zyban SR 150 mg is a Schedule 4 Prescription Only Medicine for nicotine dependence and is on the PBS (healthdirect, verified 1 October 2026); we found no Australian registration of bupropion for depression. In India, Tata 1mg and Truemeds mark Bupron XL 300 as prescription required. Check the rules where you live.
Buying genuine Bupron XL
The MHRA warns that "Any medicine not authorised for sale in the UK can be unsafe or ineffective and there is no way of knowing what is in them or the negative health effects they can have", and it advises UK buyers to "Only use UK-registered pharmacies, including online pharmacies displaying the official green cross logo". That warning covers this Indian Bupron XL pack. When your order arrives, read the strip: it should say Bupron XL 300, bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets 300 mg, name Sun Pharma, and carry a batch number and expiry date. We have not confirmed what the Indian tablet looks like, and it will not match the US Wellbutrin XL tablet (creamy white to pale yellow, printed "Wellbutrin XL 300", US 3). These checks cannot prove that tablets are genuine, because counterfeiters copy packaging. If a batch causes unusual symptoms, seek medical advice and report it to your medicines regulator (the MHRA Yellow Card scheme in the UK, FDA MedWatch in the US, the TGA in Australia or Health Canada) as well as to us.
Storage. The US label says store at 25°C, with excursions permitted to 15 to 30°C, and notes the tablets may have an odour (16); the Canadian monograph says 15 to 30°C (11). Truemeds gives "Store Below 30° C" for the Indian pack. No refrigeration is needed (our reading of these storage ranges). Keep it out of the reach of children.

This page is for information and is not medical advice. Bupropion is a prescription antidepressant that can cause seizures and, like all antidepressants, carries a warning about suicidal thoughts in young people. Take it only as prescribed by a doctor who follows you up, start at the dose your doctor sets, and do not start, stop or change the dose without your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bupron XL 300mg?
Bupron XL 300mg is an Indian brand of bupropion hydrochloride 300 mg extended-release tablets; Tata 1mg and Apollo name Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd as the marketer. Bupropion is an aminoketone antidepressant. In the US and Canada, bupropion XL is labelled for major depressive disorder and for preventing seasonal (autumn and winter) depression. It is not the bupropion product licensed for stopping smoking.
Is Bupron XL the same as Wellbutrin XL?
It has the same active ingredient at the same strength and is a once-daily extended-release tablet. We have not seen bioequivalence data comparing Bupron XL with Wellbutrin XL or a US generic, and the Indian pack is not registered with the FDA, MHRA, TGA or Health Canada. Do not swap between bupropion brands or between XL and SR tablets without your doctor.
How much does Bupron XL 300mg cost per tablet?
As of October 2026, it costs $2.00 a tablet in the 30 pack, $1.57 in the 60 pack and $1.46 in the 90 pack, before $25 shipping on orders under $149; the pack selector shows the current price. US pharmacies pay about $0.10 a tablet for generic bupropion XL 300 mg (NADAC $0.09815, effective 21 October 2026), so US buyers with a prescription will usually pay much less locally.
How do I take Bupron XL 300mg?
One tablet once a day in the morning, with or without food, swallowed whole and never crushed, divided or chewed (US label 2.1). If you miss a dose, do not take an extra tablet; take the next one at the usual time, because the seizure risk is dose-related (US label 17). Keep alcohol to a minimum or avoid it.
Can I start on bupropion XL 300 mg?
No. The US and Canadian labels start at 150 mg once daily in the morning and raise it to the 300 mg target dose after 4 days for depression or 7 days for seasonal depression (Canada: as early as 1 week). Increasing gradually lowers the seizure risk. Bupron XL 300 cannot give the 150 mg dose because it must not be divided, so you need a 150 mg XL tablet first.
How long does bupropion take to work?
The Canadian patient information says improvement may take several weeks, and to keep taking it and talk to your healthcare professional if you are worried it is not working. The US label says depression usually needs several months or longer of treatment after it responds, with the need for treatment reassessed periodically. Do not stop it suddenly on your own.
What is the maximum dose of bupropion XL?
The current US Wellbutrin XL label and the generic 150 mg and 300 mg XL labels we checked say the dose should not exceed 300 mg once daily, and the Canadian monograph calls 300 mg a day the maximum. Older Wellbutrin XL labels allowed up to 450 mg, and one US product, Forfivo XL 450 mg, is still labelled for 450 mg a day in people already taking 300 mg a day; that is a prescriber's decision. Seizure risk rises with dose, almost tenfold between 450 and 600 mg a day for the immediate-release form (US label 5.3). Never take two 300 mg tablets together.
What are the side effects of bupropion XL 300 mg?
In the US label's XL trials, the most common were headache (34% vs 26% on placebo), dry mouth (26% vs 15%), insomnia (20% vs 13%), nausea (13% vs 8%) and constipation (9% vs 2%). It can raise blood pressure and can cause seizures. Antidepressants carry a boxed warning about suicidal thoughts in children, teenagers and young adults: get help at once for new or worse depression or thoughts of suicide.
Who should not take Bupron XL 300mg?
The US label says never with a seizure disorder; current or past bulimia or anorexia; abrupt withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiepileptic drugs; an MAOI now or within 14 days; linezolid or intravenous methylene blue; or allergy to bupropion. Canada adds any history of seizures, thioridazine, and other bupropion products such as Zyban or Contrave. With moderate to severe liver impairment the US maximum is 150 mg every other day, so this product is not suitable.
Do I need a prescription for bupropion?
Yes. Bupropion XL is a prescription medicine in the US and Canada (Wellbutrin XL and generics). In the UK and Australia bupropion on its own is licensed only as Zyban for stopping smoking, which is prescription-only (UK POM, Australian Schedule 4); it is also part of a naltrexone combination for weight management (Mysimba in the UK, Contrave in Australia). This Indian pack is not registered with the FDA, MHRA, TGA or Health Canada, and the FDA says personal importation is illegal in most circumstances. An antidepressant must be started and monitored by a doctor.
How long does delivery of Bupron XL 300mg take?
Orders usually arrive in 7 to 14 business days in plain packaging, with tracking. Shipping is $25 on orders under $149 and free from $149. If you already take bupropion XL 300 mg, order well before your supply runs out and do not stop or ration your tablets while you wait.
