What it is used for
According to the US FDA label for propylthiouracil tablets (DailyMed), propylthiouracil is used for Graves' disease with hyperthyroidism or toxic multinodular goiter in patients who cannot take methimazole and for whom surgery or radioactive iodine is not suitable, and control of overactive thyroid symptoms before surgery or radioactive iodine in the same patients. The US label carries a boxed warning about severe liver injury and liver failure, which is why it is kept for patients who cannot take methimazole. Your doctor decides whether it suits you.
