About Allegra 180mg

Allegra 180mg is the Indian pack of fexofenadine hydrochloride 180 mg, a once a day antihistamine from Sanofi India. Fexofenadine blocks histamine at H1 receptors and is used for hay fever symptoms (sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose or throat, itchy and watery eyes) and for itching and hives in chronic urticaria. It is a second generation antihistamine: the UK label calls it non-sedating. We sell Allegra 180mg in packs of 30, 60 and 90 tablets at $1.00 a tablet before shipping.

Three points first, because they matter more than the brand name. One: in the US, fexofenadine 180 mg has been sold without a prescription since 2011, and US store brands cost far less than ours: Walmart lists its own fexofenadine 180 mg at 12 to 30 cents a tablet, against our $1.00. Two: the same is broadly true elsewhere; in the UK, Canada and Australia fexofenadine is sold in pharmacies or on general sale, so local supply is usually faster and cheaper than a parcel that takes 7 to 14 business days. Three: take each tablet with water, not fruit juice, and not at the same time as an aluminium or magnesium antacid, because both can reduce how much fexofenadine you absorb. This page sets out what the labels say: the current US Allegra Allergy and Allegra Hives Drug Facts labels, the last US prescription label for Allegra tablets, and the UK Telfast 180 mg product information, all listed at the end.

What fexofenadine is used for

The current US Allegra Allergy label says the 180 mg tablet "temporarily relieves these symptoms due to hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies: runny nose, sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, itching of the nose or throat". The US Allegra Hives 24HR label, also 180 mg, says it "reduces hives and relieves itching due to hives (urticaria)" and adds: "This product will not prevent hives or an allergic skin reaction from occurring."

In the UK, the 180 mg tablet has a narrower licence: Telfast 180 mg is indicated "in adults and children 12 years and older for the relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria". UK hay fever products use the 120 mg strength instead.

A blocked or stuffy nose is not among the symptoms the US Allegra Allergy label lists, and in the US prescription label's pollen exposure study onset was measured "for reduction in total symptom scores, excluding nasal congestion". Fexofenadine is also not a treatment for a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis); see the urgent help section below.

Price per tablet

Prices below are as of October 2026; the pack selector shows the current price.

PackPricePer tabletShippingPer tablet with shipping
30 tablets$30.00$1.00$25$1.83
60 tablets$60.00$1.00$25$1.42
90 tablets$90.00$1.00$25$1.28

All three packs cost the same per tablet before shipping and all are under the $149 free shipping line, so a single pack carries $25 shipping. The lower cost per tablet with shipping in the larger packs comes only from spreading the same $25 over more tablets. At the label dose of one tablet a day, the packs last 30, 60 and 90 days (our arithmetic).

NADAC is the average price US pharmacies pay to buy a medicine, published by the US Medicaid programme; it is not the price a patient pays at the counter. The NADAC figure above is the rate for 13 generic fexofenadine 180 mg tablet NDCs in the file dated 28 October 2026, all effective 21 October 2026. The Walmart prices are from walmart.com, checked on 28 October 2026; the brand item we found was a gelcap, not a tablet.

The plain answer for US readers: fexofenadine 180 mg is an over the counter medicine in every US pharmacy and supermarket, and a store brand costs about a third or less of our price per tablet before shipping, and you can have it today. A 30 tablet pack from us costs $55 with shipping; at Walmart's 300 count price, 30 tablets work out at about $3.72 (our arithmetic). We do not think buying Allegra 180mg from us makes sense for most US buyers. In the UK, Canada and Australia, check local pharmacy prices first as well. We have not seen data comparing the Indian Allegra tablet with US or UK products.

Which strength to choose

One 180 mg tablet a day is the whole daily dose. Do not take more than one Allegra 180mg tablet in 24 hours (US Drug Facts: "do not take more than 1 tablet in 24 hours"). Higher doses did not help more in the trials described in the US prescription label: for hay fever there was "no additional reduction in total symptom scores with higher doses of fexofenadine hydrochloride up to 240 mg twice daily", and for chronic urticaria there was "no additional benefit" of 120 or 240 mg twice daily over 60 mg twice daily. Any dose above the label for long-lasting hives is a decision for a doctor, not for self-treatment. We also list Allegra 120mg, a 120 mg version of this tablet.

How to take Allegra 180mg

  1. Dose. Adults and children 12 and over: one 180 mg tablet once a day (US Drug Facts and UK label). Children under 12: "do not use" (US Drug Facts); the UK label says 180 mg "has not been studied in children under 12".
  2. With water. The US Drug Facts say "take one 180 mg tablet with water once a day" and "do not take with fruit juices". The last US prescription label explains why (section 7.3): "Fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange and apple may reduce the bioavailability and exposure of fexofenadine." In those studies, skin reactions to histamine were "significantly larger" when fexofenadine was taken with grapefruit or orange juice than with water, and bioavailability was reduced by 36%; the label says "The clinical significance of these observations is unknown" and recommends taking the tablets with water "to maximize the effects of fexofenadine". The labels do not say how long to leave between juice and a tablet; as our cautious advice, keep fruit juice away from the time you take your tablet.
  3. Antacids. US Drug Facts: "do not take at the same time as aluminum or magnesium antacids". In the US prescription label (7.1), an aluminium and magnesium antacid taken within 15 minutes of fexofenadine cut fexofenadine exposure (AUC) by 41% and peak level by 43%. The UK label says "It is advisable to leave 2 hours between administration of fexofenadine hydrochloride and aluminium and magnesium hydroxide containing antacids." Omeprazole did not interact (UK label).
  4. Food. The UK label says to take it before a meal. In the US prescription label, a high fat meal lowered fexofenadine exposure by 21% and peak level by 20%.
  5. Timing. In histamine skin tests the US prescription label reports an effect by 1 hour and a maximum at 2 to 3 hours (after 20 mg and 40 mg doses); the UK label says the effect begins within one hour, is maximal at 6 hours and lasts 24 hours. Hay fever symptom scores improved 60 minutes after a single 60 mg dose in a pollen exposure study (US prescription label, 14.1). The UK label notes no evidence of tolerance after 28 days of dosing.
  6. Hives. The US Allegra Hives label says stop use and ask a doctor if symptoms "do not improve after 3 days of treatment" or "the hives have lasted more than 6 weeks".

Kidney problems, older age and other groups

The labels disagree here, so we give each one.

  • Kidney disease. US Drug Facts: "Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease. Your doctor should determine if you need a different dose." The last US prescription label recommended "a dose of 60 mg once daily" as the starting dose in adults with decreased renal function (mild, moderate or severe), because peak levels were 87% to 111% higher and the half-life 59% to 72% longer in mild to severe kidney impairment (12.3). Our reading of that advice: Allegra 180mg is not a suitable starting dose for someone with reduced kidney function. The UK label says studies in renally impaired patients "indicate that it is not necessary to adjust the dose", but that there is only limited data and fexofenadine "should be administered with care". Ask your doctor.
  • Age 65 and over. US Drug Facts: "adults 65 years of age and older: ask a doctor". The US prescription label found peak levels 99% higher in people 65 and over, with a similar half-life, and says care should be taken in dose selection because older people are more likely to have reduced kidney function (8.5). The UK label gives no dose change but says to use it with care. The MHRA's 2021 report on pharmacy supply of 180 mg says older people should seek advice from their doctor first.
  • Liver disease. The US prescription label says pharmacokinetics in hepatic impairment "did not differ substantially" from healthy people. The UK label lists liver impairment among the groups with limited data, to be treated with care.
  • Heart disease. UK label (4.4): people "with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned that, antihistamines as a medicine class, have been associated with the adverse reactions, tachycardia and palpitations".
  • Pregnancy. US Drug Facts: "If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use." UK label: fexofenadine "should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary". The US prescription label says it should be used "only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus".
  • Breastfeeding. UK label: fexofenadine "is not recommended for mothers breast-feeding their babies", because fexofenadine was found in breast milk after terfenadine. The US prescription label says caution should be exercised.
  • Children under 12. Do not give Allegra 180mg to a child under 12 (US Drug Facts: "do not use").

Side effects

In the US prescription label's trials, most side effects were about as common with fexofenadine as with placebo. The table shows the 180 mg once daily rows the label reports; it leaves out the 60 mg twice daily and children's rows, so it is a selected table.

Selected adverse reactions with fexofenadine 180 mg once daily vs placebo (US Allegra prescribing information, Revised 7/2007, section 6.1)
TrialAdverse reactionFexofenadine 180 mgPlacebo
Hay fever, age 12 and over (n=283 vs 293)Headache10.3%7.2%
Hay fever, age 12 and overBack pain2.5%1.4%
Chronic urticaria, age 12 and over (n=167 vs 92)Headache4.8%3.3%

The US label says the incidence of adverse reactions, "including somnolence/fatigue, was not dose-related". The UK label lists headache, drowsiness, dizziness and nausea as common (1 in 100 to 1 in 10) and fatigue as uncommon, "with an incidence similar to that observed with placebo"; blurred vision has an unknown frequency. Reported after marketing, with unknown frequency (UK label): allergic reactions including angioedema, chest tightness, breathlessness, flushing and anaphylaxis; insomnia, nervousness, sleep problems or nightmares; fast heartbeat and palpitations; diarrhoea; rash, hives and itching.

Drowsiness and driving. The UK label says fexofenadine is unlikely to affect driving, but advises checking your own response before driving or doing complicated tasks. Heart rhythm. No statistically significant rise in QTc against placebo was seen at doses up to 240 mg twice daily for 2 weeks in people with hay fever (US prescription label, 12.2). No chart is shown: we have no blog chart for fexofenadine.

When to get urgent help

Call emergency services (911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia), or ask someone to call for you, if you have:

  • Hives with trouble swallowing, dizziness or loss of consciousness, swelling of the tongue or in or around the mouth, trouble speaking, wheezing or problems breathing, or drooling. The US Allegra Hives label says: "Get emergency help immediately"; these "may be signs of anaphylactic shock".
  • Signs of an allergic reaction to the tablet itself: swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing, flushing or a spreading rash. US Drug Facts: if an allergic reaction to this product occurs, "Seek medical help right away."
  • Taken more than one tablet in 24 hours, or a child has swallowed tablets. US Drug Facts: "In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away" (numbers added by us: US 1-800-222-1222, Australia 13 11 26). Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and dry mouth have been reported with overdose (UK label).

If a doctor has prescribed an adrenaline (epinephrine) auto-injector for you, never use fexofenadine instead of it. The US Allegra Hives label says: "never use this product as a substitute for the epinephrine injector", and to carry the injector at all times. Tell the emergency staff that you took fexofenadine (Allegra), how much and when.

Who should not take Allegra 180mg

Never take it if:

  • you have ever had an allergic reaction to fexofenadine or to any ingredient of the tablet (US Drug Facts "Do not use"; UK label 4.3 contraindication; US prescription label 4)

Do not use it, or ask a doctor first:

  • children under 12: "do not use" (US Drug Facts)
  • kidney disease, or age 65 and over: ask a doctor first (US Drug Facts); see the kidney section above
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding: ask a health professional first (US Drug Facts); the UK label advises against use in breastfeeding
  • a history of heart disease: the UK label warns of tachycardia and palpitations with antihistamines as a class
  • hives that are an unusual colour, look bruised or blistered, or do not itch: ask a doctor before use (US Allegra Hives label)
  • to prevent hives from a known cause such as foods, insect stings, medicines or latex: the US Allegra Hives label says do not use it for this, "because this product will not stop hives from occurring"

Medicines and drinks that interact

  • Fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple): may reduce how much fexofenadine is absorbed; take the tablet with water (US Drug Facts and US prescription label 7.3, quoted above).
  • Aluminium or magnesium antacids: do not take at the same time (US Drug Facts); leave 2 hours (UK label).
  • Erythromycin and ketoconazole: raised fexofenadine levels (peak +82% and +135%, exposure +109% and +164%, US prescription label 7.2); the UK label says 2 to 3 times. Neither label found effects on the QT interval or more side effects. The UK label says other P-glycoprotein inhibitors or inducers can also change fexofenadine levels; apalutamide lowered exposure by 30%.
  • Fexofenadine is barely broken down by the liver (about 5% of a dose, US prescription label), so the UK label says it "will not interact with other medicinal products through hepatic mechanisms".

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about every medicine and supplement you take. Do not take two antihistamine products together unless a doctor tells you to; this is our advice.

Prescription and legal status

United States. The FDA switched Allegra (NDA 20872) from prescription to non-prescription on 24 January 2011 (FDA switch list). Allegra Allergy 24 Hour and Allegra Hives 180 mg are sold over the counter, and generic fexofenadine 180 mg is sold over the counter too. The FDA says personal importation of unapproved medicines is illegal in most circumstances, and this Indian pack is not registered with the FDA.

United Kingdom. Fexofenadine 120 mg for hay fever has been on general sale since December 2020, and the 30 mg children's tablet is prescription only (MHRA, 2021). The 180 mg strength is licensed for chronic urticaria: Telfast 180 mg is a prescription-only medicine, while some 180 mg products, such as Almerg 180 mg (MHRA reclassification report, April 2021, pack of 30) and Allevia Hives 180 mg, are pharmacy medicines. This Indian pack is not registered with the MHRA.

Canada. The Health Canada Drug Product Database lists Allegra 12 Hour (60 mg), Allegra 24 Hour (120 mg) and Allegra Hives as non-prescription drugs. We found no 180 mg fexofenadine product in the database (searched 28 October 2026).

Australia. Fexofenadine tablets are a Schedule 2 pharmacy medicine under the Poisons Standard, October 2026, except small packs labelled for hay fever in people 12 and over (for a 180 mg daily dose, 10 tablets or fewer and no more than 10 days' supply), which are unscheduled. Telfast 180 mg is listed as Schedule 2.

India. Truemeds and Tata 1mg mark Allegra 180mg as prescription required. Check the rules where you live.

Buying genuine Allegra

The MHRA warns that "Any medicine not authorised for sale in the UK can be unsafe or ineffective and there is no way of knowing what is in them or the negative health effects they can have." It advises UK buyers: "Only use UK-registered pharmacies, including online pharmacies displaying the official green cross logo". That warning covers this Indian pack. When your order arrives, read the strip: it should say Allegra 180 and fexofenadine 180 mg, name Sanofi India, and carry a batch number and expiry date. Truemeds lists a strip of 10 tablets, stored below 30 C. These checks cannot prove that tablets are genuine, because counterfeiters copy packaging. If a batch causes unusual symptoms, seek medical advice and report it to your medicines regulator (the MHRA Yellow Card scheme in the UK, FDA MedWatch in the US, the TGA in Australia or Health Canada) as well as to us.

Delivery

We ship Allegra 180mg to the US, UK, Australia and Canada in plain packaging with tracking. Standard delivery takes 7 to 14 business days. Shipping costs a flat $25 on orders under $149 and is free from $149. For hay fever that has already started, a local pharmacy is faster. See our shipping page and refund policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Allegra 180mg used for?

Allegra 180mg is the Indian pack of fexofenadine hydrochloride 180 mg, a once a day antihistamine from Sanofi India. The US Allegra Allergy label uses the 180 mg tablet for hay fever symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, itchy nose or throat), and the US Allegra Hives label uses it for hives and itching. In the UK, the 180 mg tablet is licensed for chronic idiopathic urticaria (long-lasting hives).

Is Allegra 180mg the same as US Allegra?

It contains the same active ingredient at the same strength as US Allegra Allergy 24 Hour and Allegra Hives 180 mg. It is a different pack made for the Indian market by Sanofi India, it is not registered with the FDA, and the inactive ingredients may differ. We have not seen data comparing the Indian tablet with the US or UK products.

How much does Allegra 180mg cost per tablet?

As of October 2026, $1.00 a tablet in the 30, 60 and 90 packs before shipping; the pack selector shows the current price. With the $25 shipping on orders under $149, that is $1.83, $1.42 and $1.28 a tablet. US pharmacies pay about $0.23 for a generic 180 mg tablet (NADAC, effective 21 October 2026), and Walmart listed its own 180 mg tablets at 12.4 to 30 cents each on 28 October 2026.

Is it cheaper to buy fexofenadine 180 mg in a US store?

Yes, in almost every case. Fexofenadine 180 mg has been sold without a prescription in the US since 2011, and store brands cost about a third or less of our price per tablet before shipping, with no wait. A 30 tablet pack from us costs $55 with shipping. We do not think buying from us makes sense for most US buyers.

How do I take Allegra 180mg?

Adults and children 12 and over take one tablet once a day with water, and no more than 1 tablet in 24 hours (US Drug Facts). The UK label says take it before a meal. Do not take it with fruit juice, and do not take it at the same time as an aluminium or magnesium antacid: the UK label advises leaving 2 hours between them.

Why should I not take Allegra with fruit juice?

The US label says do not take it with fruit juices and to take it with water. The last US prescription label says fruit juices such as grapefruit, orange and apple may reduce the bioavailability and exposure of fexofenadine; in its analysis bioavailability fell by 36%, although the clinical significance is unknown. Grapefruit, orange and apple juice are all named.

How quickly does Allegra 180mg work and how long does it last?

In histamine skin tests with 20 and 40 mg doses the US prescription label reports an effect by 1 hour and a maximum at 2 to 3 hours; the UK label says it starts within one hour, peaks at 6 hours and lasts 24 hours. Hay fever symptom scores (excluding nasal congestion) improved 60 minutes after a single 60 mg dose in a pollen exposure study. The half-life is about 11 to 15 hours.

Should I take 2 tablets if one does not work?

No. The US label says do not take more than 1 tablet in 24 hours. In the trials in the US prescription label, higher doses gave no extra benefit for hay fever (up to 240 mg twice daily) or for chronic hives (above 60 mg twice daily). If one tablet a day is not enough, or hives last more than 6 weeks, see a doctor.

What are the side effects of Allegra 180mg?

In the US prescription label's hay fever trial, headache occurred in 10.3% on 180 mg vs 7.2% on placebo and back pain in 2.5% vs 1.4%. The UK label lists headache, drowsiness, dizziness and nausea as common, at rates similar to placebo. Allergic reactions, including swelling and anaphylaxis, have been reported rarely after marketing (US prescription label): get emergency help if they happen.

Who should not take Allegra 180mg?

Do not take it if you have ever had an allergic reaction to fexofenadine or any ingredient of the tablet, and do not give it to children under 12. Ask a doctor first if you have kidney disease, are 65 or over, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have heart disease. The last US prescription label recommended 60 mg once daily as the starting dose with reduced kidney function.

Do I need a prescription, and how long does delivery take?

Fexofenadine 180 mg is sold over the counter in the US. In the UK the 180 mg tablet is prescription only or a pharmacy medicine, depending on the product. In Canada fexofenadine is non-prescription, and in Australia it is a pharmacy medicine. Indian listings mark Allegra 180mg as prescription required. We deliver in 7 to 14 business days in plain packaging with tracking.
