Biltree 600mg

Biltree 600mg is a praziquantel tablet made in India by Kachhela Medex Pvt. Ltd. Each tablet contains 600 mg of praziquantel, the same amount as a Biltricide tablet. Praziquantel treats infections with flukes (such as the blood flukes that cause schistosomiasis, and liver flukes) and tapeworms. It does not treat roundworms, pinworms or hookworms. We sell Biltree in packs of 40, 80, 120 and 180 tablets, from $1.00 a tablet in the largest pack.

Be aware that even our smallest pack holds far more tablets than one course needs. A one day schistosomiasis course for a 60 kg adult is six tablets (see the dose table below), and a single beef or pork tapeworm dose for the same adult is half to one tablet, and a dwarf tapeworm dose is two and a half tablets. Praziquantel is a short course, not a daily medicine, so most people will not use a whole pack.

Compared with Biltricide and US generic praziquantel

The two contain the same amount of praziquantel, but no study has compared Biltree with Biltricide. NADAC is what US pharmacies pay, not a retail price. If you are in the US and have a prescription, compare cash prices for generic praziquantel at local pharmacies before you order from abroad. Bayer told Canadian health professionals in September 2025 that Biltricide has been discontinued globally. Bayer supply in Australia ended in March 2025, and Health Canada has allowed the exceptional, temporary import of US-labelled Biltricide.

What praziquantel treats

• Schistosomiasis (bilharzia), caused by blood flukes, in people aged 1 year and older. The US label covers all species of schistosoma, for example S. mansoni, S. haematobium, S. japonicum and S. mekongi.
• Liver fluke infections: clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis (Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini).
• Tapeworms: the CDC names praziquantel as the preferred treatment for taeniasis (beef and pork tapeworm) and the treatment of choice for dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana). These uses are not in the US label.

Praziquantel does not treat roundworms, pinworms, whipworms or hookworms; those need a different medicine such as albendazole or mebendazole. Larval tapeworm infection in the brain or eye (cysticercosis) is a specialist condition, covered under who should not take it below. Which dose: worked out from body weight

Praziquantel has no single standard number of tablets. The dose depends on the infection and on body weight, so ask a doctor to confirm yours. The table shows the arithmetic for adults at three example weights.

Many doses do not fall on whole tablets. Biltricide tablets have three scores and break into four 150 mg segments so the dose can be matched to weight. We have not confirmed that Biltree tablets are scored the same way, so check the tablets you receive and ask a pharmacist how to make up a dose that is not a whole number of tablets. The CDC notes that 10 mg/kg may cure taeniasis more often than 5 mg/kg.

How to take Biltree

1. Take the tablets with water during a meal.
2. Swallow them whole. Do not chew them or keep pieces in your mouth: the label warns that the bitter taste may cause gagging or vomiting.
3. For the three dose courses, leave 4 to 6 hours between doses, all on the same day.
4. For children under 6, the label says tablets may be crushed and mixed with soft food or liquid to prevent choking, and used within 1 hour of mixing. Children's doses must come from a doctor.
5. Do not drive or operate machinery on the day you take it or the following day (label, patient counselling).
6. We suggest avoiding grapefruit juice around the course: the label reports it raised peak praziquantel levels 1.6 fold and total exposure 1.9 fold, and the effect on safety has not been studied.

Medicines that change praziquantel levels

• Rifampin (rifampicin) and other strong CYP3A inducers: contraindicated. In a label study, praziquantel could not be detected in the blood of 7 of 10 people who had taken rifampin. Where treatment can wait, the label says the prescriber should stop a clinically significant CYP3A inducer at least 2 to 4 weeks before praziquantel; it can be restarted one day after the course if needed. Do not stop rifampin or any TB or HIV medicine without your doctor.
• Efavirenz and other moderate CYP3A inducers: avoid unless the benefit outweighs the risk. Efavirenz cut praziquantel exposure by 77%.
• Some epilepsy medicines, such as carbamazepine and phenytoin, are strong CYP3A inducers in the FDA drug interaction tables, so they fall under the rifampin contraindication above.
• CYP450 inhibitors such as cimetidine, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin and ritonavir may raise praziquantel levels.

Tell the doctor about every medicine you take, including epilepsy medicines and treatment for tuberculosis or HIV, before a course is planned.

Side effects

The US label lists malaise, fever, headache, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, nausea and hives as the reactions seen in adults and children. It gives no percentages, and says these reactions may be more frequent or more serious in people with a heavy worm burden. Reports after marketing, with Biltricide and other praziquantel products, add:

Because some were reported voluntarily, the label says their frequency cannot always be estimated reliably.

When to get urgent help

• Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, widespread rash, hives or blistering of the skin: these can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
• A seizure, severe headache, confusion or changes in vision, especially if you have, or might have, cysticercosis.
• Fainting, a very slow, fast or irregular heartbeat.
• Worsening fever, breathlessness or feeling very unwell after treatment for recently caught schistosomiasis. The label warns of reactions to the dying parasites that can be life threatening, including respiratory failure and brain inflammation.
• Taking more than the dose your doctor worked out.

Tell the emergency staff that you took praziquantel, how much and when.

Who should not take Biltree

Never take it if (US label contraindications):

• you are allergic to praziquantel or any ingredient of the tablet
• you have cysticercosis of the eye: killing the parasite inside the eye can cause permanent damage
• you take rifampin or another strong CYP3A inducer

Talk to a doctor first (US label warnings):

• Epilepsy or other nervous system problems: the label's patient advice says it should not be used, and a doctor should weigh benefit against risk before any treatment. This includes any sign that the nervous system may be involved, such as lumps under the skin that could be cysticercosis. Praziquantel can make brain disease from schistosomiasis, lung flukes or pork tapeworm cysts worse, and the label says treatment for fluke infection linked with cysticercosis in the brain should be in hospital. The CDC advises care with praziquantel in anyone suspected of cysticercosis.
• Recently caught (acute) schistosomiasis: the label warns of clinical deterioration and says treatment in the acute phase may not stop the infection progressing.
• Heart rhythm problems: the label says to monitor people with arrhythmias during treatment.
• Moderate or severe liver disease: total exposure was about 3.5 times higher in moderate (Child-Pugh B) and 15 times higher in severe (Child-Pugh C) liver impairment, and the label says to monitor for side effects.
• Age 65 or over: the label notes older people may be more sensitive, because the drug is cleared by the kidneys.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The label says published studies, including two randomised trials, have not linked praziquantel in pregnancy with birth defects, miscarriage or other harm. Limited data show praziquantel passes into breast milk at low levels; there is no information on its effects on a breastfed baby. Decide with a doctor.
• Children under 1 year: safety has not been established.

Avoid it if you take efavirenz or another moderate CYP3A inducer: the label advises patients not to take it with efavirenz unless a doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk.

Prescription and legal status

In the US, praziquantel is a prescription medicine. Generic praziquantel 600 mg tablets are available, and Bayer has said Biltricide itself has been discontinued globally. In the UK, no praziquantel product is licensed for human use; doctors can prescribe it as an unlicensed special-order medicine. In Australia, Bayer supply ended in March 2025. A Section 19A product is available on private prescription, and other formulations can be obtained through hospital pharmacies under the TGA Special Access Scheme. In Canada, Health Canada has allowed temporary imports of the US-labelled pack; Bayer has asked doctors to keep it for potentially life-threatening infections with no alternative. Biltree is not licensed by the FDA, the MHRA, the TGA or Health Canada, and in the US the FDA says personal importation of unapproved medicines is illegal in most circumstances. Buying genuine Biltree

The MHRA warns that any medicine not authorised for sale in the UK can be unsafe or ineffective and that there is no way of knowing what is in it, and it advises UK buyers to use only UK-registered pharmacies. That warning covers Biltree, which is not authorised in the UK. When your order arrives, check that the strip names Kachhela Medex and praziquantel 600 mg and shows a batch number and an expiry date. These checks cannot prove that tablets are genuine, because counterfeiters copy packaging. Because an anti-parasite treatment can fail without obvious signs, ask your doctor about a follow-up test after treatment. If a batch causes unusual symptoms, seek medical advice and report it to your medicines regulator (the MHRA Yellow Card scheme in the UK, FDA MedWatch in the US, the TGA in Australia or Health Canada) as well as to us.
