What it is used for
According to the US FDA label for Exjade (DailyMed), deferasirox is used for chronic iron overload caused by blood transfusions in patients 2 years and older, and chronic iron overload in patients 10 years and older with non transfusion dependent thalassaemia who meet set liver iron and ferritin levels. The US label carries a boxed warning that deferasirox can cause kidney failure, liver failure and bleeding in the stomach or gut, which can be fatal, so kidney and liver tests are needed before and during treatment.
